You lovely spot
When the architect Colin St John Wilson was commissioned to design the British Library, he was confronted by the challenge of creating a building that should work both as an open public building and an intimate working space for hundreds of people. After a thirty year-long process, numerous political changes and massive opposition from his own colleagues, the building opened and the critics’ voices were silenced. He had probably succeeded with the impossible. Morten Kildevæld Larsen comments on the art of constructing open, yet intimate public spaces in You lovely Spot. Turning his back to the traffic circling the Harbour Park in Skien, the artist proposes an almost universal reaction to this specific spot in the park. Kildevæld Larsen wants to actively debate the future changes of this area, and does this by reminding us that our movements are directed by the physical space and the visual impressions surrounding us. You lovely spot is thus a friendly demonstration.
